When choosing leather goods, many people often wonder, "What will it look like after years of use?" or "How comfortable will it be to use?" even if they like what they see on display.

In this blog post, we share the thoughts and experiences of someone who actually uses Munekawa items.

We spoke with Mr./Ms. S from Hyogo Prefecture, who has been using our bell-shaped key case, "Bell S," for eight years.

We asked about their daily carrying habits, what makes it easy to use, the reality of their maintenance routine, and the condition of the leather and hardware after eight years of use.

Types and number of keys stored

The Bell S is a compact key case that can hold about 3 to 5 standard keys. Inside, it features one key ring and one detachable key hook.

Mr./Ms. S currently keeps two house keys, one key to their parents' home, and two bicycle keys—a total of five—inside the Bell S.

That is the perfect number of keys for the storage capacity of the Bell S.

Sometimes I put it in my bag, but most of the time I carry it in my pants pocket. It’s small, so in my case, it almost never bothers me even when it's in my pocket.

Using the detachable hook for bicycle keys

Among the four types of keys, Mr./Ms. S uses the detachable "key hook" for the bicycle keys.

It’s great to be able to keep the bicycle keys together and quickly remove them from the key hook only when I'm about to ride.

The "house and family home keys," which are turned while still attached to the case, are kept on the fixed ring. The "bicycle keys," which are inserted into the lock only when riding, go on the detachable hook.

By using two types of hardware according to their purpose, there is no wasted motion when setting off or parking. Over the course of eight years, this distinction has naturally become a part of their daily routine.

Does the leather require maintenance?

When asked about regular leather maintenance, Mr./Ms. S admitted, "Actually, I haven't really done any."

I think I should apply oil to it, but I never quite get around to it... I'm sure it would stay cleaner if I cared for it, but I’m a bit lazy, so I've just been using it as is.

Even so, the Bell S, used for eight years, has no noticeable cracks, and the surface has developed a deep, lustrous patina quite different from when it was new. The daily friction and natural oils from their hands, as they carry it in their pants pocket and touch it repeatedly, seem to have served as natural daily care.

That said, they mention paying a little attention to where it is stored.

After I get home, I don't just leave it in my pocket; I try to place it in a well-ventilated area. Maybe that's why it hasn't been damaged by moisture.

Of course, this doesn't mean no maintenance is needed regardless of how you use it. However, the expression the leather has developed naturally through daily life—without overthinking it—holds the unique charm of a leather accessory that has been truly lived with.

About the snap button

More than the texture of the leather, what Mr./Ms. S feels is "durable" is the snap button. Despite using it for eight years, they don't feel that it has loosened at all.

I’ve used it for eight years without really thinking about it, and the snap button has never loosened or come undone on its own. I suppose it depends on how you use it, but I really feel it’s quite durable.

The Bell S has a structure where you pull a strap to retract the keys into the main body, and secure them with a snap button on the back. Since the user repeatedly opens and closes it with their fingertips throughout the day—when leaving, returning home, or riding a bike—this is the part most subject to stress in the key case.

The leather's luster has deepened, and minor scratches have increased. Yet, the "peace of mind as a tool" that keeps keys securely fastened remains unchanged even after eight years.

The "just-right" fit of the Bell S learned through long-term use

The reason Mr./Ms. S has continued to use the Bell S for eight years without switching to another key case isn't due to an abundance of special features, but rather a "just-right" feel that perfectly accompanies their daily actions.

What I like best is its "simple usability." I started using it casually, and I never felt it was difficult to use, nor has its comfort changed after all these years. I think that is why I have continued to use it for so long.

It’s the accumulation of small, easy-to-use moments—so subtle that you don't even consciously think, "This is convenient"—that has supported them over these long eight years.

Leather goods change in comfort depending on the type of keys you carry and your lifestyle.

"I don't carry a smart car key, and I want to go out light with just a few keys in my pocket."

For such people, the Bell S is sure to become an indispensable partner as the years go by.
