The new fragment case we introduced in our August blog post.
After further prototyping, the final design has been determined. Now, at our workshop in Daikokucho, Osaka, production is officially underway for the upcoming release.
Although it is not yet complete, we would like to share the current progress with you, along with some photos of the production process.

What is a fragment case?
A fragment case is a compact item designed to store the bare essentials: cards, coins, and bills.
The fragment case we produce at Munekawa is roughly the size of a smartphone. It is recommended for those who mainly use cashless payments but want to carry a small amount of cash and a few cards.

Through repeated prototyping, the specifications are set
As of August, we were working on the sixth sample of the fragment case. Since then, we have continued the process of making, using, and revising the areas we were concerned about.
After many fine adjustments, we have finally arrived at a design we are satisfied with.
Once the shape is finalized, the next step is to prepare the cutting dies. A cutting die is a metal mold used to cut leather into the shape of parts. We prepare them according to the product's design and use them for cutting.

Cutting parts from four colors of leather
The fragment case is also made using Italian Buttero leather and is produced in four colors: black, blue, camel, and green.
Natural leather has a slightly different texture for each piece. Therefore, before cutting, we arrange the dies on the leather to check exactly which parts will be taken from which area.

Once the position is decided, we use a cutting machine to press the die down and cut out the parts.

Thinning the overlapping sections
The cut parts then proceed to the "skiving" process. Skiving is the work of using a specialized machine to shave the back of the leather to adjust its thickness.
Where leather parts overlap, they tend to become thick. By thinning the overlapping parts and edges in advance, we achieve a sleek shape that feels good in the hand and fits well in a pocket.

Especially with small items like the fragment case, subtle differences in leather thickness have a significant impact on the final finish and the impression it gives when held.
In this area as well, we iterated through many prototypes to refine a shape that remains durable without becoming bulky.
The logo position is also decided
One of the changes from the sample is the position of the logo. Ultimately, we decided to place it slightly lower than in the sample.
Because it is a small item, the position of the logo can change the entire impression. It is a position we decided after comparing many options.

Assembling and stitching the card pocket
The card pocket is made by layering multiple parts. We align the parts, glue them together, and then sew them with a sewing machine.
Even the slightest misalignment can affect the finish and comfort of use. We proceed with each one carefully.

Almost ready
The new fragment case is scheduled to be completed very soon. Our production staff is crafting each one with great care.
We will share details regarding the release date soon. Stay tuned!
