Why make so little? Munekawa's craftsmanship and limited edition products

Munekawa occasionally produces and sells products marked as "limited edition."

Recently, we produced only three L-shaped zipper wallets called "Cram" using Horween's Bourbon Shell Cordovan.

Since limited edition items are few in number, they can sometimes sell out before you even notice them. You might think, "Why don't they make more?"

This time, we'd like to explain the reasons behind Munekawa's production of small-batch limited edition items.

Produced when only a small quantity of good leather becomes available

The most common trigger for limited edition items is the arrival of leather.

Some leathers from tanneries are consistently stocked as standard items, while others are available only in very small quantities. Sometimes, deadstock leather, which is no longer in production, also arrives.

By using such high-quality leather that we don't usually handle but happened to obtain, we can offer products with different charms even in the same design.

"If we have good leather, we want to make products and deliver them." This desire is the first reason why we produce limited edition items, even in small quantities.

We want you to enjoy colors with a different appeal than our standard range.

Munekawa's standard colors are black, blue, camel, and green. These colors are chosen based on criteria such as not getting tiresome with long-term use, beautiful aging, and being suitable for a wide range of people.

However, there are also attractive colors beyond our standard range. While adding them to the standard collection requires careful assessment of supply stability and long-term demand, it would be a shame not to utilize them at all.

The pink and purple Buttero leathers used in the recently produced "Enfold Coin" bi-fold mini wallet and "Tuck" IC card case are precisely such colors. These two vibrant and unique colors possess a charm not found in our standard palette.

Many people express interest in limited edition colors, saying things like, "I really like this color, I want to try it," or "The impression changes so much with a different color."

I constantly feel that limited edition colored items also play a role in conveying the charm of leather products that cannot be fully expressed by standard colors alone.

From the idea of "this combination is interesting"

During production, staff sometimes come up with ideas such as, "What if we combined this material with that material?" or "Wouldn't it be interesting to make it in this color?" These ideas are also a trigger for creating limited edition products.

Combining different colors or materials for the inside and outside, or changing the color of the zipper. With limited edition items, there's a bit more freedom in combining materials and choosing colors compared to our standard items.

Perhaps one of the appeals of limited edition items is that they allow customers to enjoy the free-thinking ideas of our craftsmen, who daily handle various leathers and are intimately familiar with product structures.

As a small workshop, we can realize small-batch production.

Munekawa is a small workshop in Okoku-cho, Osaka, where a small team of craftsmen finishes products by hand. We do not operate on a mass production system, but this allows us the agility to quickly realize small-batch productions.

When we think, "I want to make something with this leather," we can start production in units of just a few pieces. Because the quantity is small, we can carefully consider the specifications best suited for each individual item, down to minute details such as the combination of outer and inner leather, thread color, and edge finishing.

The reason why most limited edition items are produced in small quantities is not only due to material availability and supply, but also related to the manufacturing approach of a small workshop.

We want to offer an encounter that is slightly different from standard products.

Limited edition items are, by nature, limited in quantity, so we cannot offer them to everyone who is interested, but we believe that the excitement of "only being available at this time" is also a unique charm of limited edition items.

Why Munekawa values in-house production

Since its founding in 1999, Munekawa has continued to create products with the desire to "deliver leather products that can be used for a long time."

We value not only "selling" but also "ensuring that our products continue to be used," and we handle everything in-house, from planning, production, and sales to repairs.

Why are we, a small company, so committed to in-house production?

Here's why.
